c. 1888 Antique Continental Pink Turkey Oyster Plate Gilman Collamore Union Square N. Y.
Antique Continental Turkey Oyster Plate, Gilman Collamore, Union Square, N. Y.
The original 19 century design for what are now called turkey oyster plates was French. The name. “turkey” was coined later when someone noticed that the oyster shells which form the backdrop for the 5 wells resemble a turkey head and tail feathers.
It is unusual to find a turkey oyster plate with a pale pink turkey. Usually the turkey is brown. We have pictured the turkey with his “head” to the left and “tail feathers” to the right. The color is the palest pink with the middle feather a little stronger pink. The 5 oyster wells, artfully arranged, are marked in pink and brown. The background has a ribbon design. This oyster plate is lustrous and in beautiful condition – no chips, hairlines or repairs. Touches of gilding add additional luster to the plate.
